Crypto Exchanges Disrupt Traditional Commodity Trading Routines
Commodity trading desks often enter a risk management mode on Fridays as traders wait for markets to reopen on Sunday evening. This 'weekend problem' has long been a challenge for oil options traders, who need to adjust their positions before markets close. However, with the growth of perpetual futures on crypto exchanges, this dynamic is changing.
In March, tensions between Iran and Israel led to a surge in volume on Hyperliquid's decentralized exchange, which offers 24/7 trading. The total value of active contracts hit $1.2 billion on Sunday, March 8, when traditional markets were closed. Since then, weekend trading has grown by around 25%, with 2-3 times more volume on weekdays compared to weekends for oil perps on Hyperliquid.
The increased availability of round-the-clock perpetuals is expected to change how traders price short-dated West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude options. Energy Aspects, an energy and macro analytics firm, predicts that implied volatility will no longer be depressed on Fridays as traders can now hedge their positions over the weekend.
While some traders are cautious about the impact of perpetual futures on traditional markets, others see it as a valuable tool for hedging bets during the weekend. However, institutional traders are still hesitant to participate due to lack of meaningful liquidity and profitability concerns.
