Crypto Exchanges Evolve into Comprehensive Financial Operating Systems
Crypto exchanges are evolving into comprehensive financial systems, expanding beyond trading platforms to offer a range of products and services.
Recent developments from Crypto.com, Coinbase, and S&P Dow Jones Indices suggest that major crypto platforms are shifting their focus towards becoming broader financial operating systems, bringing together various assets such as stocks, derivatives, tokenized securities, payments, and custody under one roof.
Crypto.com received a $400 million strategic investment from Citadel Securities in July, valuing the company at $20 billion. Coinbase has also been expanding its offerings, providing stock and ETF trading to US customers and introducing crypto options and stock-based derivatives.
The infrastructure behind these platforms is becoming increasingly complex, requiring systems capable of handling different trading and settlement schedules, separate custody arrangements, asset-specific risk controls, regional product restrictions, unified account balances, accurate reporting, and transaction histories.
