Crypto Exchanges Introduce Inactivity Fees on Dormant Accounts
An inactivity fee is a charge levied by some crypto exchanges on accounts that have been inactive for a certain period, typically 12 months. The amount of the fee varies, but it's usually a flat rate, unlike trading fees. This type of fee has been introduced by some providers to cover costs associated with account maintenance and reporting obligations.
Two documented cases illustrate this phenomenon: Crypto.com's prepaid card charges $4.95 per month inactivity fee, which will increase to $5.95 from September 1, 2026. Luno, on the other hand, imposes a monthly dormancy fee of $2, with an additional $50 added from December.
Our own survey found that only one out of 15 publicly accessible fee pages mentioned the keyword 'inactivity'. This is likely because these pages are sales-oriented and do not typically include information on dormant accounts. To find this information, users must usually log in to their account or consult the provider's schedule of prices and services.
