Crypto Exchanges Prioritize Liquidity Infrastructure for Long-Term Success
In the world of cryptocurrency exchanges, building deep liquidity is crucial for long-term success. Many exchanges mistakenly assume that liquidity follows product quality, but experienced operators know better.
Centralized crypto exchanges like those in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East reached dominant positions by prioritizing liquidity infrastructure as a core operational decision. This means making deliberate choices about who provides order book depth, across which pairs, and how that relationship is structured as the venue scales.
The order book is the primary product on any exchange, outperforming interface, fee schedule, or asset selection in terms of importance to traders. When a user opens an exchange for the first time, they implicitly ask whether trading there will cost more than elsewhere, and spreads communicate the answer immediately.
BIS research shows that liquidity quality is a primary determinant of price efficiency and trader retention. Exchanges with tighter spreads and deeper books attract disproportionately more volume, which compounds over time.
