Crypto Exchanges Start Charging Fees on Residual Balances
When a cryptocurrency exchange closes down, it's not just trading that stops, users are also charged a monthly fee for any residual balance left in their accounts. At BitMEX, this fee is $50 per month or 1 percent per annum, whichever is greater.
This can be particularly harsh on small balances, as the minimum fee of $50 a month will eat up even relatively minor amounts in less than a year. For example, if you leave behind a balance of €400, it would take just over nine months for this to reach the threshold.
The situation is different at BitMart, where users are charged a custody fee of 1-2 percent per month, or at least $10 in USDT. However, this only applies if an account has been inactive for two years or more; logging in regularly can exempt you from this fee.
