Crypto Exploits Drain Over $1 Billion in Six Months
The crypto landscape is facing an onslaught of attacks, draining over $1.1 billion from users in just six months. But the threat doesn't come from a single dramatic heist or even a network-level attack on Bitcoin itself.
Instead, it's a relentless tide of smaller exploits, including phishing attacks, wallet-draining malware, and operational compromises. According to recent data, 212 separate incidents have collectively siphoned off this staggering sum.
No major protocol has issued an urgent warning about a network-level attack on the Bitcoin blockchain, which remains secure. The current vulnerability, dubbed 'Ill Bloom', targeted specific wallet implementations in July 2026, resulting in coordinated drains exceeding $5 million from affected wallets.
The dominant attack vector this year has shifted towards operational compromises, including social engineering, compromised employee credentials, and phishing emails. North Korea-linked actors have been linked to a significant portion of these incidents, using state-sponsored operatives to execute elaborate social engineering campaigns that can take months to plan.
