Crypto Giants Gear Up for Quantum Leap
Changpeng Zhao, the former CEO of Binance, has cautioned against panicking over the threat posed by quantum computing attacks on Bitcoin and Ethereum. According to a recent Google whitepaper, cracking the cryptography behind these cryptocurrencies could require fewer than 500,000 physical qubits, much less than previously estimated.
However, Zhao emphasized that migrating to quantum-resistant algorithms is necessary to ensure the security of decentralized networks. He warned that executing such a migration would be challenging due to coordination problems, disagreements over which algorithms to adopt, and potential forks in the network.
Zhao also highlighted short-term risks associated with cryptographic overhauls, including new code vulnerabilities and the need for users to update their wallets.
The industry has already begun preparing for this transition. The Ethereum Foundation launched a post-quantum security hub on March 25th, while BTQ Technologies released Bitcoin Quantum testnet v0.3.0 on March 20th, implementing the first working version of Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 360.
