Crypto Hacking Hits Record Pace in August with Surprisingly Low Losses

Crypto saw its busiest hacking month of 2026 in August, but surprisingly, it wasn't the costliest.

A record 50 major crypto hacks occurred during August, a 67% increase from July's 30 incidents. However, combined losses fell to approximately $136.3 million, a 49.5% drop from July's $270 million.

The contrast suggests that while hackers were more successful in August, they generally extracted smaller amounts of money. The average loss per incident decreased to around $2.7 million, down from $9 million in July.

The largest hack, Tectonic, accounted for over half of the total losses at approximately $74 million. This is the fourth-largest crypto theft of 2026 so far. Only about $12.9 million was lost in the remaining 40 major hacks.
