Crypto Hacks Soar 67% as New Security Product Targets Single-Key Risk
The cryptocurrency sector saw a significant spike in security breaches in August 2026, with 50 major hacks recorded across the industry. According to data from blockchain security firm Peckshield, this represents a 67% increase from the 30 incidents logged in July.
Despite the surge in attack frequency, total losses fell sharply, reaching $136.3 million, a 49.5% drop from the roughly $270 million stolen in July.
A single exploit targeting decentralized lending protocol Tectonicfi accounted for about $74 million of this month's total losses, more than 54% of the total value stolen. However, most of these funds remained trapped after the Cronos network intervened and paused its chain.
Industry experts note that many DeFi breaches still stem from a single point of failure: compromised privileged keys stored on vulnerable endpoints.
