Crypto Hacks Surge to New Heights in August, Total Losses Decline
Crypto security incidents reached new heights in August 2026, with 50 major hacks recorded across the industry. According to PeckShieldAlert, this represents a 67% increase from July's 30 attacks.
Total losses for the month came in at $136.3 million, down 49.5% from July's staggering $270 million figure.
The sharp rise in security incidents is not necessarily matched by an equivalent decline in total losses, suggesting that hackers are becoming more brazen and adaptable.
A single major exploit, the TectonicFi incident, accounted for over half of August's total losses at approximately $74 million. This was followed by a collection of smaller attacks involving Moonwell, Termlabs, Coinsbuy, and other projects.
