Crypto Hacks Total Over $4.8 Billion as Recovered Funds Reach $1.4 Billion
The crypto industry has been plagued by a series of high-profile hacks in recent years, resulting in significant financial losses for affected projects and exchanges.
Crypto Hacks Tracker: Losses and What Was Recovered, a database compiled by CoinLaw, reveals the extent of these losses. As of July 27, 2026, there have been 14 verified incidents, with disclosed losses totaling $4.8 billion.
One notable example is the Cetus Protocol hack in May 2025, which resulted in a loss of $223 million. However, thanks to an on-chain community vote and cooperation from validators, the project was able to recover $162 million of the stolen funds.
In contrast, other incidents have not been as successful. For instance, the Bybit hack in February 2025 saw losses totaling $1.5 billion, with only $43 million recovered so far. Similarly, the DMM Bitcoin incident in May 2024 resulted in a loss of $308 million, with none of the stolen funds returned.
The database also highlights the challenges faced by projects in recovering stolen assets. In many cases, the stolen funds have been mixed and laundered through various channels, making it difficult to track their movement.
