Crypto Home Invasion Surge Sparks Security Fears
The number of crypto-related home invasions has surged 20 times in just one year, according to a recent report from CertiK. In the first half of 2025, there was only one such incident, but by the same period in 2026, this number had risen to 52 verified incidents.
CertiK's H1 2026 wrench-attack report revealed that the security firm counted roughly $124.1 million in financial exposure from losses and ransom demands, a staggering 11.8-fold increase from around $10.5 million in H1 2025.
The majority of these incidents occurred in Europe, with France accounting for 33 cases. This concentration highlights the need for improved security measures to protect crypto holders and their families from physical coercion attacks.
CertiK recommends implementing multisignature or multiparty computation with geographically distributed signers to prevent attackers from gaining unilateral authority over significant funds. Additional safeguards include time limits, withdrawal delays, transaction caps, allowlists, and staged vaults.
