Crypto industry leaders are facing a growing concern over quantum computing attacks that could potentially compromise the security of Bitcoin and Ethereum. A recent Google whitepaper warned that 6.9 million BTC face exposure to these types of attacks, which could be executed with fewer than 500,000 physical qubits.

This estimate is significantly lower than previous projections, raising alarms about the potential for widespread hacking. In response, Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao urged the industry to adopt quantum-resistant algorithms, stating that 'all crypto has to do is upgrade to Quantum-Resistant (Post-Quantum) Algorithms.' However, he also warned that executing such a migration across decentralized networks would be challenging due to coordination problems and disagreements over which algorithms to use.

The Ethereum Foundation has already launched a post-quantum security hub, drawing on eight years of research. On the Bitcoin side, BTQ Technologies released a testnet implementing a practical experiment in quantum-resilient signatures. Zhao remained optimistic, stating that 'fundamentally: It's always easier to encrypt than decrypt. More computing power is always good.' He concluded by noting that crypto will likely continue to thrive even in a post-quantum world.
