Crypto Industry Faces Crunch Time in Senate Amid Negotiations
The crypto industry is facing a difficult situation in the Senate, where the status of its top legislative priority is uncertain. The industry had been counting on a vote on its bill to overhaul federal regulation of cryptocurrency before senators leave Washington for their summer break.
However, with just eight days left, negotiators are still at odds on multiple fronts, and it's unclear whether the Senate will be able to pass the legislation. The crypto industry has $140 million in super PAC funds, which were counting on a Senate vote to determine how much of that money would go towards Republicans versus being shared between parties.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune is pushing for a vote, but Democrats are warning that a failed initial vote could endanger the final product. Patrick Witt, executive director of President Donald Trump's Council of Advisers on Digital Assets, accused Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of trying to delay the bill in order to avoid Democrats being blamed if it doesn't pass.
Some Democratic offices have told crypto firms that they won't engage with the bill if it passes without bipartisan support. This has left the industry facing a difficult decision: push for a vote now and risk having no consequences if the bill fails, or wait until after the summer break and potentially miss an opportunity to pass the legislation.
