Crypto Industry M&A Spikes as EU Regulations Prove Costly
The European Union's MiCA regulation has introduced strict rules for the crypto industry, making it costly and time-consuming to comply. This has led to a wave of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in the sector as smaller companies struggle to keep up with the regulatory demands.
The new reality is that obtaining a license is no longer enough; companies need to spend years on compliance, risk management, customer protection, and operational infrastructure. Similar pressure is evident in North America, where stricter requirements are pushing companies towards partnerships or seeking larger owners.
Lawyers believe that the British model may prove to be equally stringent, with crypto companies integrated into existing financial services regulations rather than being placed in a separate regime. Banks and large financial groups have an advantage as they already possess control systems, capital, compliance, and experience managing client assets.
