Crypto Industry Sees Regulatory Shift on the Horizon
The cryptocurrency industry may be on the cusp of a defining regulatory transition, according to Tom Lee, co-founder of Fundstrat. In a recent appearance on CNBC, Lee drew an analogy between the current push for the CLARITY Act and the creation of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 1934.
The SEC was established as a national regulator after investors faced inconsistent state rules and limited federal oversight. Lee sees a parallel with today's crypto market, where companies may encounter different interpretations from agencies, state regulators, and courts.
The CLARITY Act aims to clarify how digital assets are classified and which activities fall under the SEC or Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) jurisdiction. It would establish federal registration paths for digital-commodity intermediaries and set standards for exchanges, brokers, dealers, and custodians.
