Crypto Industry Urged to Adopt Quantum-Resistant Algorithms Amid Growing Threat

Changpeng Zhao, former Binance CEO, has downplayed concerns over quantum computing attacks on cryptocurrencies, but emphasized that the industry needs to adopt quantum-resistant algorithms. According to a Google whitepaper published on March 30, 6.9 million Bitcoin (BTC) are exposed to such threats due to their cryptography being vulnerable to quantum computers.

The paper estimates that cracking this cryptography could require fewer than 500,000 physical qubits, significantly lower than previous estimates of millions. This would enable a quantum computer to derive a private key from an exposed public key in around nine minutes, which is faster than Bitcoin's 10-minute confirmation window about 41% of the time.

Zhao responded by saying 'All crypto has to do is upgrade to Quantum-Resistant (Post-Quantum) Algorithms. So, no need to panic.' However, he also warned that this would be a difficult process due to coordination problems and disagreements over which algorithms to adopt.

The Ethereum Foundation has already launched a dedicated post-quantum security hub, drawing on eight years of research, while BTQ Technologies released Bitcoin Quantum testnet v0.3.0, implementing the first working version of Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 360.
