Crypto Investors Abandon Market-Cap Rankings for Fundamentals

Share

Crypto investors are shifting their focus from market capitalization rankings to fundamental metrics such as revenue, real usage, and economic value capture. This change is being driven by industry executives who point to a growing trend of serious capital moving away from CoinMarketCap rankings.

Bitwise CEO Hunter Horsley calls this shift the end of crypto's 'CoinMarketCap leaderboard' era, where investors would often price new layer-1 blockchains as a fraction of the largest chain above them. Instead, they're digging into actual trading activity and revenue economics.

The change is also reflected in the growing gap between crypto tokens and stocks, with cryptocurrencies falling 36% in the first half of 2026 while crypto-related stocks rose 23%, according to Bitwise.
