Crypto Investors Risk Missing Out on a Much Bigger Opportunity
Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan warned that crypto investors may be underestimating where the industry is heading. He pointed to three mistakes he sees in the market right now: focusing too narrowly on today's market, using established brands and current activity as a measure of future potential, and assuming traditional finance companies will eventually take over crypto-native businesses.
Hougan said that investors are underestimating what crypto applications could eventually be used for. For example, Uniswap was built as a platform for trading cryptocurrencies, but it could become much larger if it taps into the stock and bond markets, which are worth about $150 trillion and $350 trillion respectively.
The Bitwise CIO also noted that PayPal's stablecoin launch in 2023 only accounts for 1% of the stablecoin market, despite its global brand and position in payments. Fidelity faced a similar situation after launching its crypto custody service in 2019, with Coinbase becoming the largest crypto custodian in the US.
