Crypto Investors Shift Focus from Market Cap Rankings to Fundamental Metrics
The crypto market is undergoing a significant shift in investor behavior, moving away from relying on CoinMarketCap rankings to evaluating tokens based on fundamental metrics. Industry executives point out that this change has been underway for some time and affects how investors size up tokens for the long haul.
In an interview with CoinDesk, Bitwise CEO Hunter Horsley stated that the 'CoinMarketCap leaderboard' era is coming to an end as investors now judge tokens based on revenue, adoption, and economic value. He highlighted Hyperliquid as a case in point where investors are scrutinizing the actual trading activity and revenue economics rather than comparing it to other blockchains.
The shift towards fundamental metrics also affects how prices are determined minute by minute. Perpetual futures trading continues to dominate spot volume, with funding rates, positioning, and liquidation cascades driving price movements. However, institutional counterparties now account for 72% of Wintermute's spot OTC flow in the first half of 2026, up from around 59% a year earlier.
The change is evident in the divergence between crypto tokens and stocks. Cryptocurrencies fell by 36% in the first half of 2026 while related stocks rose 23%, according to a Bitwise market review. Grayscale expects stablecoins, tokenized assets, and decentralized finance to drive demand for digital assets beyond Bitcoin.
