Crypto Investors Underestimate Industry Potential, Warns Bitwise's Matt Hougan
Bitwise's Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan warns that investors are underestimating the potential of the crypto industry. In his weekly CIO memo, Hougan highlighted three mistakes investors are making when it comes to valuing decentralized applications and their addressable market.
Hougan argues that platforms like Uniswap, Aave, and Chainlink are currently valued as if they're confined to the roughly $2 trillion crypto market. However, he points out that these platforms could eventually serve markets orders of magnitude larger, including global equities and bonds worth over $150 trillion and $350 trillion respectively.
Hougan also warns against assuming TradFi giants will automatically dominate crypto-native businesses once they enter the market. He cites stablecoins as an example, where Tether and Circle still control roughly 88% of the market despite PayPal's entry into the space.
Furthermore, Hougan argues that extrapolating future blockchain activity from today's transaction volumes is a mistake. He suggests that tokenized equities could trade 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with AI agents magnifying this shift and leading to significantly higher transaction volumes.
