Crypto Leaders Question Charitable Giving
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has sparked controversy by stating that charity and philanthropy are 'actually a net negative' for the world. In an interview, Armstrong explained why he has no intention of creating a charitable foundation, arguing that they often become 'captured by ideology.' He cited examples where charities have had unintended consequences, such as increasing crime through their efforts to reform it.
Armstrong's views have been echoed by Elon Musk, who also agrees with the notion. Musk signed the Giving Pledge in 2012 but has made minimal charitable contributions compared to his massive net worth. He even donated $5.7 billion in Tesla shares to his foundation, which is considered his most substantial contribution.
Armstrong's concerns about charities being 'captured by ideology' may be valid, given the example he mentioned of the Ford Foundation and Henry Ford's potential disappointment if he knew what they were up to. Armstrong prefers using a donor-advised fund to direct his money towards causes that help civilization advance.
