The recent collapse of BitMEX and BitMart has sparked debate among crypto enthusiasts about whether exchange shutdowns could trigger a market rebound.

BitMEX announced its closure last Thursday, while BitMart revealed it would cease operations on January 31, 2027. The abrupt closures have raised questions about the future of centralized exchanges in the industry.

Crypto leaders have shared their thoughts on the matter. Tom Lee attributed recent exchange shutdowns to the ongoing market downturn, stating that such events typically occur when crypto asset prices are at their bottom.

Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) also weighed in, suggesting that difficult times have returned and described the situation as organized business closures with clients given time to cash out their assets. However, he warned that acquiring smaller exchanges is more complex due to potential cybersecurity risks or security vulnerabilities within platform operating systems.

Market analyst StarPlatinum believes the recent shutdowns could signal a wider collapse of centralized exchanges, citing the ongoing crypto downturn, decreased interest among retail investors in altcoins, and rising business operating expenses as potential drivers. Despite this, he remains optimistic that 2026's crypto market rebound is not dead, waiting for a trigger to spark the next bull run.
