Crypto Lobbying War Spills into Senators' Home States Ahead of Key Vote

Share

The fight over the Clarity Act, a cryptocurrency legislation, has spilled into senators' home states as the industry and banking sector mount a final lobbying blitz ahead of a key vote next week.

The bill aims to provide legal certainty for crypto companies by defining which tokens qualify as securities versus commodities and which regulators oversee them. The Senate will take a procedural vote on September 15 that could determine the fate of the bill, but its chances look slim with Democrats and some Republicans warning it lacks sufficient safeguards.

The crypto industry has spent hundreds of millions of dollars campaigning to advance the Clarity Act, and the industry's grassroots supporters have been deploying op-ed pieces, letter-writing drives, and in-person events to rally support. The Blockchain Association has launched a website, clarityforamerica.com, to help individuals and firms write to their senators to urge them to vote for the bill.

The banking sector is pushing back against the bill, with some Republicans expressing concerns that it would allow certain digital tokens to compete with bank deposits, potentially hurting lending. The Independent Community Bankers of America has been mobilizing its members across the country to meet with senators in their home offices to raise their concerns.
