Crypto Losses to Wrench Attacks Skyrocket in H1 2026
Crypto holders have lost over $30 million to wrench attacks in the first half of 2026, Chainalysis reports. This puts annual losses on pace to exceed the record $58 million reported in 2025 if the current trend continues.
France has emerged as a major hotspot for these attacks. A data breach involving French tax authorities exposed information on high-net-worth crypto investors, expanding the pool of potential targets for criminals.
Chainalysis also notes that attackers are increasingly targeting crypto holders' family members. Home invasions and kidnappings have become more common cases in this category.
