Crypto Market Consolidates Amid EU Regulatory Crackdown
For years, choosing a crypto exchange was largely based on brand recognition and liquidity. However, in just one month, this calculus has completely changed due to regulatory pressures.
The EU's MiCA regulations have led to the consolidation of Europe's digital asset market at an unprecedented rate. Binance, the world's largest exchange by volume, withdrew its MiCA license application in Greece right before the deadline and suspended new registrations for EU users from July 1. Additionally, Google Play Store has removed Binance's app due to non-compliance.
HTX, another exchange, was added to the EU sanctions list last week due to alleged connections to the Russia/Ukraine war. Starting August 23rd, HTX will cease doing business with European counterparts and has been removed from the App stores as well.
BitMart and BitMEX, two long-standing trading venues, have announced their decision to shut down entirely within days of each other. While individual reasons may vary, platforms that ignored compliance or built on regulatory arbitrage are facing significant consequences.
The market is responding rapidly. Since April, OKX Europe has seen a 5.5x increase in crypto deposits from non-MiCA-licensed exchanges, a 300% increase in AUM, and a 158% growth in app downloads during the transition period.
