Crypto Market Faces $27 Billion Options Expiry Event
A massive options expiry event is unfolding in the cryptocurrency market today, with over $27 billion in contracts set to expire on Deribit. This represents more than half of the exchange's total open interest and could mark one of the largest structural resets in crypto history.
The event covers both monthly and quarterly (Q4 2025) periods, with Bitcoin accounting for $23.6 billion of the expiring options and Ethereum making up $3.8 billion. The current price of BTC is around $89,155, while ETH trades at $2,976.
Rollover activity dominates the market as institutions shift positions to January contracts to mitigate risk. Call options dominate the playing field, outnumbering puts nearly three to one. The 'max pain' levels sit near $95,000 for Bitcoin and $3,000 for Ethereum.
