Crypto Market Flips from Extreme Fear to Extreme Greed in Record Time
The cryptocurrency market has made an astonishing turnaround from 'extreme fear' to 'extreme greed', according to the Crypto Fear and Greed Index. This is the first time since late 2024 that the index has reached this level, breaking above the green zone of 80, which indicates panicked buying and frothy conviction.
The speed of the move is remarkable, with a 45-point climb in just 30 days. A month ago, the index was at 36, squarely in 'fear' territory, while last week it reached 41, barely neutral. The index has now erased nearly all of the caution that defined the first half of 2026.
The sentiment shift is also notable for being the fastest between two extremes and the only move from extreme fear to extreme greed since Coinmarketcap started tracking the index. This rapid change in mood tracks a Bitcoin run that has left the rest of the market behind, with Bitcoin gaining roughly 24% in a week while the broader crypto market grew less.
The breakout is attributed to last Wednesday's announcement by the U.S. Treasury, which said it would double its long-bond buybacks from $2 billion to $4 billion per operation starting September 9. This move weakened the dollar and nudged investors toward Bitcoin as an inflation hedge.
