Crypto Market Loses $70B in Single Hour Amid US-Iran Conflict
The cryptocurrency market saw a dramatic decline in value after news of US and Israeli strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities broke out. In just one hour, approximately $70 billion was wiped off the total capitalization of cryptocurrencies. The drawdown was particularly sharp, with the total market cap falling from around $2.24 trillion to $2.17 trillion between 7 and 8 a.m. UTC.
Bitcoin (BTC) was not alone in its decline, as Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), and XRP all saw significant losses. Ethereum dropped by about 9% to around $1,850, while Solana fell roughly 10%. Meanwhile, Bitcoin slid to near $63,000 - a decline of about 6.5% on the day.
Derivatives markets amplified the move sharply, with liquidations and leverage playing a significant role in the sell-off. Within minutes of the first headlines, $100 million in long positions were wiped out across major exchanges. Over 24 hours, total long liquidations climbed to approximately $445 million.
