Crypto Market Plunges: Can It Recover Before 2026 Ends?
The cryptocurrency market has been hit hard in 2026, with Bitcoin (BTC) down 28.86%, Ethereum (ETH) falling 36.68%, Solana (SOL) dropping 39.60%, and XRP plummeting 46.8% from their January prices.
Interest rates have played a significant role in the downturn, as investors opt for government bonds' guaranteed returns over crypto's volatility. The Federal Reserve has kept interest rates between 3.50% to 3.75% all year, with three members voting for a hike at the last meeting, making it less likely for rates to decrease soon.
Each of the four major cryptocurrencies faces unique challenges, with institutional buyers yet to return and ETFs recording net withdrawals throughout the year. Bitcoin's price dropped due to investors moving capital into AI stocks and withdrawing $4.83 billion from its ETFs in 2026, including a record $4.51 billion in June.
For crypto to recover by the end of 2026, rates would need to decrease, with traders pricing a 32% chance of a rate hike at the September meeting. However, inflation fell to 3.4% in July, and core inflation decreased to 2.5%, making it more likely for rates to remain steady or even decrease.
