Crypto Market Reels from Warsh's Hawkish Jackson Hole Speech
The crypto market took a hit after Kevin Warsh's speech at Jackson Hole, where he outlined a hawkish outlook for the US Federal Reserve. The Fed Chair emphasized that inflation remains above target and that there is still work to be done. BTC dropped 3% in the past 24 hours, with Ethereum (ETH) and XRP falling 2.7% and 4.89%, respectively.
Warsh noted that unemployment is at a multi-decade low of 4.1%, but PCE inflation remains high at 3.7% in the last year and 4.1% annualized over the past six months. He stated that several signs indicate current financial conditions are not restrictive, including friendly lending standards and tight credit spreads.
The Fed is committed to achieving its 2% inflation target, with a focus on prices. Warsh discouraged the markets from looking for forward guidance from the Fed, calling this strategy 'overstayed its welcome'. The crypto market reaction was immediate, with investors assuming a risk-off attitude and BTC pulling away from the $80K resistance line.
