Crypto Market Retreats, But September Could Hold Unexpected Surprises
Bitcoin and Ethereum pulled back from their recent gains in September, but the market could hold a surprise. After August's breakout, which saw Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) reach new heights, the two cryptocurrencies retreated below $80,000 and $2,500 respectively.
This consolidation comes after institutional demand remained strong, with Bitcoin funds seeing $3 billion in August inflows. Solana (SOL), on the other hand, emerged as a standout anomaly according to Santiment data, but its price did not follow suit.
Solana's recent surge may be coming to an end, as its gains are now priced in. The cryptocurrency hit a 2026 high of $110.38 on August 27 before falling about 10% to $98.35 by September 2. Trading volume also cooled sharply from $7.16 billion to as low as $2.05 billion.
Ethereum whales slowed their selling pace, with just 2,040 ETH worth about $5 million sold during the period. This marks a sharp decline in whale selling, potentially easing near-term selling pressure on Ethereum. Meanwhile, XRP showed the opposite trend, with 4.9% of its supply moving after sitting dormant for an average of 542 days.
