Crypto Market Sees Record Token Buybacks as Hyperliquid Dominates
Token buybacks have become a significant strategy in the cryptocurrency market, with nearly $640 million dedicated to buying back tokens since January. This growth is largely driven by Hyperliquid and Pump.fun, which account for nearly 90% of recorded buyback amounts.
Hyperliquid stands out as it dedicates 99% of its transaction fee revenue to buying back its HYPE token. Since its launch in December 2024, the platform has bought back and canceled $1.3 billion worth of contracts. This aggressive approach has contributed to a 70% increase in the HYPE token's value over the past year.
Other projects, such as Sky Protocol and Lido, are also experimenting with buybacks to link revenue and token value. However, results vary, and some projects have seen little success despite their efforts.
The effectiveness of buybacks is still being tested in the cryptocurrency market, but it's clear that this strategy has become a key aspect of many projects' strategies.
