Crypto Market Sees Widespread Contraction as Ethereum ETF Holdings Plummet
Binance Research has reported a broad onchain contraction in the crypto market for the first half of 2026. This trend saw a significant decline in total DeFi TVL, totaling $43.4 billion (38%) from January to June.
Ethereum's spot ETF holdings fell to 5.2 million ETH during this period, indicating reduced institutional interest in the asset. Layer 2 user operations decreased by approximately 77% between January and June, signaling a downturn in engagement across the network.
The major Layer 1 market capitalization dropped by $246.5 billion (42%) over the same period, highlighting a broader contraction rather than mere sector rotation. BNB Chain emerged as the only deflationary L1 with an annualized burn rate of 5.05%.
