Crypto Market Shifts Towards Contrarian Bet on Smaller Tokens
Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan says that crypto has become a contrarian bet in the market. The total crypto market capitalization has dropped to $2.38 trillion, around 46% below its October peak of $4.3 trillion. This decline is attributed to investors favoring artificial intelligence (AI) and smaller tokens with strong fundamentals.
Nvidia's nearly 1,500% surge since the release of ChatGPT in late 2022 demonstrates this trend. Hougan notes that 'who needs crypto when the Nasdaq-100 is up 43% year-over-year?' He adds that investors now favor fundamental analysis over market vibes.
Instead of flowing into Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Solana (SOL), capital is rotating into smaller tokens like Hyperliquid (HYPE) and Stellar (XLM). The latter has seen a 50% increase after the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation announced its partnership with the network. Hougan suggests that small pockets of green may signal a turning point in the market.
