Crypto Market Surge: Bitcoin Hits $72,000 as HYPE and PEPE Soar
The crypto market experienced a significant surge on August 20, driven by a historic short squeeze and positive news from the US government. Bitcoin (BTC) price reached $72,000 for the first time since June 1, while Hyperliquid (HYPE) and Pepe Coin (PEPE) led the altcoins with gains over 24%.
The rally began on August 19 after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the US would buy back treasuries to support the bond market. This news sparked a buying frenzy, forcing short sellers to close their positions and causing $3.03 billion in short liquidations across the crypto sector.
BTC had the highest liquidations of $1.76 billion, followed by Ethereum with $1.16 billion. Solana and HYPE also experienced significant liquidations of $109 million and $58 million respectively.
The gains continued on August 20, with President Trump meeting with crypto executives at the White House. Although the details of their discussion were not disclosed, the meeting revived momentum around the CLARITY Act bill, which aims to bring clarity to US crypto regulations.
