Crypto Market Surpasses High-Yield Bonds in Value
The crypto market has surpassed the global high-yield bond market in value, according to Grayscale Research. This milestone was reached in Q4 2024, with the crypto market cap exceeding $3 trillion compared to the inflation-linked bond market cap. The growth can be attributed to a Bitcoin rally that saw prices surpass $100,000 and gain over 35% following Donald Trump's US election victory.
The unprecedented growth has been linked to increased competition in the smart contract platform sector, with high-performance blockchains like Solana and Ethereum experiencing substantial growth. Investors were drawn to Layer 1 networks, such as TON and Sui, which saw a surge in activity. The Grayscale Research Top 20 features ETH, SOL, SUI, and OP as the top-performing smart contract platforms.
The report also noted that despite the increase in competition, smart contract platforms are still experiencing design issues affecting decentralization, security, and scalability. A statistical relationship exists between market cap and fee revenue on these platforms, with higher fee revenue providing value to the network through staking rewards and token returns.
