Crypto Market Trading Volume Drops by 74%, Largest Exchanges Maintain Dominance
Spot trading volume on major crypto exchanges has seen a significant decline, dropping by 74% year over year. According to data from analytics firm Artemis, this represents a sharp contraction in market activity compared to the highs seen in August of last year.
Binance remains the largest player in spot trading volume among its peers, followed closely by Coinbase, Bybit, and Gate. However, smaller and mid-sized exchanges have been disproportionately affected, with trading volumes plummeting by much steeper margins.
This trend signals a broader cooling in the cryptocurrency market, moving away from speculative fervor seen in previous cycles. The reduced market volatility and lower retail participation are contributing factors to this decline. For traders, particularly those on smaller exchanges, this environment poses challenges such as lower liquidity and wider bid-ask spreads.
