Crypto Market's Abrupt Shift from 'Frozen' to Chaos
The cryptocurrency market experienced an abrupt shift from stagnation to chaos in recent days. For over three months, prices remained largely stagnant following a May surge that saw Bitcoin (BTC) reach $82,000 and subsequent crash to under $58,000 on July 1.
However, within hours of August 19, the market witnessed an unexpected explosion of growth, with most assets surging to new local peaks. BTC led the pack, rising from under $65,000 to nearly $80,000 before pulling back slightly.
The analysts at the Kobeissi Letter attributed this rapid change to leverage rather than a single fundamental catalyst. They noted that crypto was 'frozen' for 110 consecutive days between May 1 and August 19, but the real shift occurred on August 19 when the market experienced its seventh-largest liquidation event on record.
This unexpected recovery didn't die down immediately, as previous attempts had. Instead, it was followed by another surge. Within a day and a half, the total crypto market cap increased by around $500 billion as BTC approached $80,000 for the first time since mid-May.
