Crypto Markets End August on High Note, but Rally Remains Fragile
Crypto markets ended August on a high note, with Bitcoin recording its strongest monthly run this year. The leading cryptocurrency gained 24.5% in value, closing at $81.5K after a two-week surge from around $63K.
However, the story was not just about Bitcoin's performance. According to data from CryptoRank, the combined market capitalization of top-100 altcoins actually grew faster than Bitcoin, up 26.5% in August.
The average altcoin gained 24.5%, with even smaller and mid-sized tokens performing well, up a solid 17.1%. This was not just a few names carrying the load, but rather a broad-based rally across the market.
In other positive news, DeFi lending saw significant growth in August, with active loans across major protocols increasing by 30% to $26.1B from June's $20.1B. Aave was the standout performer, making up more than half of this total at $12.5B.
However, beneath the surface, there are signs that the rally may be fragile. Profit-taking spiked twice in a single week, with long-term holders exiting their positions as prices rose. Funding rates also hit a yearly high, indicating that traders were leaning on leverage to amplify their gains.
