Crypto Markets Face $27 Billion Options Expiry
Today marks a significant event in the crypto markets as $27 billion in Bitcoin and Ethereum options expire on Deribit, accounting for over half of the exchange's total open interest. The year-end expiry is larger than last week's and represents one of the largest structural resets in crypto history.
The expiring options cover both monthly and quarterly (Q4 2025) periods, with Bitcoin making up $23.6 billion of the contracts and Ethereum accounting for $3.8 billion. Call options dominate the market, outnumbering puts nearly three to one.
Deribit analysts note that despite the event's size, the market appears calm, with Bitcoin's implied 30-day volatility index (DVOL) sitting at around 42%. The 'max pain' levels for Bitcoin and Ethereum are near $95,000 and $3,000 respectively, where options sellers stand to profit most while buyers experience financial loss.
The rollover activity currently dominates the trading market as institutions shift positions to January contracts to mitigate risk. This is creating noise in short-term options data, making it difficult to predict price action after the expiry.
