Crypto Markets Shift Focus from Price Predictions to Economic Value Capture
Crypto markets are evolving rapidly, moving beyond short-term price predictions and trading alerts. Regulation is becoming more explicit, institutional infrastructure is developing around custody and market access, stablecoins are establishing themselves as a substantial part of digital finance, and investors are paying greater attention to whether individual networks actually capture economic value from the activity taking place on them.
The regulatory environment is shifting quickly. In March 2026, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission issued an interpretation clarifying its treatment of several crypto-asset categories, including digital commodities, digital collectibles, digital tools, stablecoins, and digital securities. This attempt to establish clearer distinctions within a market that had long operated amid legal uncertainty is significant.
The importance of liquidity in crypto markets cannot be overstated. Liquidity determines how easily capital can move into and out of an asset without producing a substantial change in price. Two cryptocurrencies with identical market capitalizations can behave very differently if one trades through deep markets with numerous buyers and sellers while the other depends on a relatively small amount of available capital.
