Crypto Market's Sudden Shift: Leverage Fuels $500B+ Rally
The cryptocurrency market has seen a dramatic shift in recent days, going from being 'frozen' to experiencing chaos. For over 110 consecutive days, between May 1 and August 19, the market was relatively calm, with Bitcoin's price ranging from $58,000 to $82,000.
However, on August 19, around 8:30 AM ET, the market suddenly surged, with many assets experiencing a sharp increase in value. This sudden move was followed by a 'seventh-largest liquidation event on record' just less than a day later.
The total crypto market cap increased by around $500 billion within a day and a half, with Bitcoin approaching $80,000 for the first time since mid-May. The analysts at the Kobeissi Letter suggest that leverage played a big role in this sudden surge, rather than a single fundamental catalyst.
