Crypto Markets Suffer $25 Billion Liquidations in 24-Hour Span
A massive wave of liquidations swept through crypto derivatives markets, wiping out roughly $15.44 billion in Bitcoin (BTC) positions over the past 24 hours. This event was characterized by traders as a rapid unwinding of overcrowded 'leveraged long' bets rather than a simple price dip.
The liquidation shock extended beyond BTC to other assets, with Ethereum (ETH) recording an additional $10.15 billion in liquidations and XRP (XRP) and Solana (SOL) seeing about $2.80 billion and $3.11 billion respectively.
Spot prices declined in response but were relatively contained compared with the scale of derivatives reset, with BTC trading at $63,811.18, down 1.68% on the day, and Ethereum falling 1.45% to $1,919.57.
The episode highlighted how quickly derivatives activity can intensify during stress, with total crypto derivatives trading volume rising 5.19% to $727.40 billion, consistent with a mix of stop-outs, re-entries, and rapid position flips that amplify short-term volatility.
