Crypto Markets Surge as $4 Billion in Leveraged Shorts Are Wiped Out
The cryptocurrency market experienced a dramatic surge this week as more than $4 billion worth of leveraged short positions were forcibly liquidated across a 48-hour window, propelling Bitcoin and other digital assets to their highest levels in weeks.
On August 19, the U.S. Treasury Department announced that it would expand its bond repurchase program for longer-dated securities, doubling the maximum size per session from $2 billion to $4 billion. This move created favorable conditions for speculative assets like cryptocurrencies, causing Bitcoin to jump from $64,100 to $66,800 in the first hour following the announcement.
The initial price movement proved sufficient to initiate the first round of automatic closures on leveraged bearish positions, triggering a cascade of liquidations that continued for approximately 18 hours. Short position closures totaled around $2.77 billion, representing 92% of all forced liquidations during this period.
Bitcoin's market capitalization currently sits at $1.5 trillion, though this remains approximately 40% below its October peak above $126,000. The sustainability of this rally beyond the end of the Treasury's enhanced buyback program on November 4 will hinge on whether fresh capital flows into the market or traders merely adjust their positioning ahead of the next directional move.
