Crypto Miners Break Free from Bitcoin's Lead
Crypto mining stocks are bucking their traditional trend of following Bitcoin's price movements. Instead, they're rising even as the coin they mine drifts lower. Cipher Mining (NASDAQ:CIFR) is leading the charge, jumping 8% to $19.18 in Tuesday afternoon trading.
While MARA Holdings (NASDAQ:MARA) shares are climbing 6% to $11.96, tracking a similar theme with less force, their revenue mix remains weighted towards mining, carrying more direct Bitcoin sensitivity than Cipher Mining's stock. The broader industry backdrop is also doing its share of the work, with expectations that the four largest hyperscalers will invest around $725 billion in AI infrastructure in 2026.
Cipher Mining has already shifted capacity toward compute contracts rather than mining alone, which reflects investor willingness to underwrite the HPC transition on early execution proof rather than promised milestones. MARA Holdings is also moving towards a more diversified revenue mix, with energized hashrate up 22% year over year to 70.3 EH/s in Q2 2026.
