Crypto Ownership Surges Across America: 67 Million Holders, One in Four Own Digital Assets
The United States has seen a significant increase in cryptocurrency ownership over the past year, with an estimated 67 million people now holding digital assets. According to data from the National Cryptocurrency Association's 2026 State of Crypto Holders Report, California leads the country with approximately 9.5 million crypto holders, followed closely by Texas and Florida.
While these four states have the largest number of crypto owners, a nationwide state-by-state comparison shows that crypto ownership is widespread across the country. In fact, over one in four American adults now own cryptocurrency, which is up from one in five just last year.
The data also reveals that some less-populated states have higher percentages of residents who own cryptocurrency. For example, Alaska leads the country in crypto density, with more than one-quarter of its population estimated to hold digital assets.
Crypto ownership estimates are based on an online survey conducted by the National Cryptocurrency Association and The Harris Poll among 10,000 people in the U.S. from February 12 to March 3, 2026. The survey uses demographic weighting and Bayesian credible intervals, with an estimated precision of +/- 0.7 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
