Crypto Payment Cards Surge in Popularity as Stablecoin Spending Soars
Crypto payment cards are gaining traction, according to recent data from American Banker and A16z Crypto. The monthly volume of crypto card transactions reached $759 million, with stablecoin spending surging by 2.5 times year-over-year.
The primary driver behind this growth is increased accessibility to stablecoins as a practical method of payment. Tether (USDT) accounts for 72% of crypto card payment volumes, while USD Coin (USDC) makes up around 18%. This shift towards stablecoins is seen as a viable alternative to volatile cryptocurrencies for everyday transactions.
The regulatory environment has also contributed to the surge in crypto card payments. The passage of stablecoin legislation, including the Stablecoin Act, has removed uncertainty and encouraged consumer adoption and institutional investment in crypto payment infrastructure.
Visa and Mastercard have played a significant role in expanding their blockchain payment solutions, making it easier for consumers to use crypto cards for everyday transactions. By 2035, the crypto card market is expected to grow from $2.1 billion to $12.68 billion at a compound annual growth rate of 19.68%.
