Crypto Platforms Must Watch Politically Exposed Persons Closely
A Politically Exposed Person (PEP) in cryptocurrency is someone who holds or has held a high-ranking public position, including family and close associates. This group includes heads of state, senior government officials, judges, military leaders, and executives at state-owned companies.
While not inherently criminal, PEPs present an increased risk for bribery and money laundering due to their public power and influence.
Crypto exchanges, wallet providers, CEXs, and some DeFi and DEX projects monitor and flag the activity of these individuals through Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) checks during onboarding. This process increases compliance costs and can impact security, adoption, and custody workflows.
It's essential for platforms to identify PEPs and treat them as higher-risk customers due to their potential for abuse of power.
