Crypto Plays Key Role in Cross-Border Trade for Sanctioned Countries
The recent decline in cryptocurrency prices has highlighted its role as an alternative trade channel for countries under international financial sanctions. In Russia and Iran, crypto assets have become essential tools for cross-border payments due to their limited access to traditional finance.
According to analysts, the main concern for these countries is not the price of Bitcoin but rather the liquidity and convertibility of digital assets into traditional currencies. This risk is more significant than a decline in Bitcoin's value.
Russia has seen a significant increase in its use of crypto assets for cross-border settlements, with the cumulative turnover of the ruble-linked A7A5 stablecoin reaching $140 billion in August 2026. However, this figure represents the platform's total turnover and may include repeated movements of assets.
Stablecoins like USDT have become increasingly popular as a means to reduce price risks associated with volatile assets like Bitcoin. However, experts warn that these coins can create problems related to financial stability, interoperability, and monetary sovereignty.
